We sell direct, with no retailer markup and no luxury packaging surcharge — which is how a 9.9 lb premium bag from us costs less per month than 5 lb bags sold through specialty channels. But price isn’t everything. Here’s what actually matters when you compare what’s in your cat’s box.
Your cat spends real time in the box every day. So does the air around it. Low-dust litter matters — which is why veterinary guidance often recommends low-dust formulas for cats with respiratory sensitivities. “Low dust” was the #1 unprompted callout across our convention surveys — 83% of testers flagged it without us asking.
Cats lick their paws constantly — whatever’s tracked outside the box ends up in their digestive system. Litter Riot is four food-grade plant ingredients you can read on the bag. No “proprietary blend.” No undisclosed binders. No synthetic fragrance carriers. The full list fits in one sentence.
Heavy clay tracks. Light pellets don’t, as much. Tofu litter generally tracks less than clay — but tofu brands vary. Pellet shape, bag weight, and packaging all affect how much ends up outside the box. 56% of our testers called out less tracking as a top Litter Riot benefit — second only to dust.

Most cat litter falls into one of three categories. Here’s what each one typically contains, and how Litter Riot compares — without singling anyone out.
Category | Primary ingredient | What you’re trading off |
|---|---|---|
Traditional clay
| Sodium bentonite · natural clay | High absorbency. Heavy bags. Tendency to track and produce dust. Non-biodegradable — goes to landfill. Often blended with proprietary clumping and odor-control additives that aren’t itemized on the label. |
Traditional Crystals
| Amorphous silica gel |
Synthetic crystals that absorb moisture and let water evaporate. Lightweight and long-lasting. Sharper edges some cats reject. Non-biodegradable. Some formulas change color to indicate urine pH. |
Plant-based / tofu
| Soybean fiber + binders (quality varies) | Plant-derived, biodegradable, generally lower-dust than clay. Quality varies widely across brands — some “tofu” blends include bentonite clay, synthetic binders, or undisclosed fragrance carriers. Read the label. |
LITTER RIOT
| Soybean fiber · corn starch · guar gum · green tea | Four food-grade plant ingredients. Fully disclosed on the front of the bag. No clay. No silica. No synthetic fragrance. No “proprietary blend.” Nothing else added. |
You decide.
Category descriptions reflect general industry characteristics, not any specific brand. Always read the ingredient label on the litter you’re considering. Litter Riot’s full ingredient list is printed on the front of every bag.
We gave away free bags at POP Cats Chicago and Seattle on one condition: tell us the truth when you got home. What follows is what they wrote back — every word theirs, not ours
Noticed less dust
“Low dust” was the #1 unprompted positive across every survey. Not a lab number — a tester percentage.
Less tracking
More than half of testers called out reduced tracking, even those who’d switched from other tofu litters.
Real clumping
Tight, scoopable clumps that hold together. Testers called this out as a top benefit — it’s what makes a litter actually usable day to day.
“The no dust, great clumping, and less tracking are the reasons I switched to tofu — and your litter did not disappoint.”
A full month.
Most “premium” tofu litters ship 5 to 6 pounds — and their own product pages tell you that’s only half a month per cat. Litter Riot ships 9.9 lbs in one bag. You buy half as often.
Two bags a month just to keep up with the smaller premium tofu brands.
You shouldn’t have to.
We gave away hundreds of bags at cat conventions and asked everyone to tell us the truth. No filtering. No editing. No hiding the parts we wish we hadn’t gotten.
“The no dust, great clumping, and less tracking are the reasons I switched to tofu — and your litter did not disappoint.”
Honest answer: it depends. We’ve seen anywhere from 2 to 6 weeks per bag across our testers, with most one-cat households landing around 4 weeks. Litter box size, scoop frequency, and your cat’s habits all change the math. The 4-Pack subscription defaults to ship about every 4 months — roughly one bag per month — and you can speed it up or slow it down anytime with no penalty.
In most U.S. counties, small water-soluble amounts of plant-based litter can be flushed. The pellets dissolve in water — no clay, no silica, no plastic. Always check your local plumbing regulations first. Older homes, septic systems, and certain municipalities restrict flushing of any cat-litter product regardless of material.
All four ingredients are food-grade and plant-based. Small accidental ingestion from paw-licking or tracking isn’t a safety concern — but this isn’t designed to be food, and we don’t encourage it as a habit. If your cat is actively eating the litter, talk to your vet about “pica”.
Most basic scoopers have slot widths designed for fine-grain clay litter. Our pellets are larger, which means a wide-slot scooper performs noticeably better. Any pellet-litter scooper with 5mm slits from pet store will work.
Not the long-pellet version. The pellets are large enough that they can jam the rake mechanism on most automatic boxes. We’re working on a ground/fine version for a future release. For now, manual scoop only.
