Why we started POP Cats

A note from Edgar Alexander, Co-founder

It started with a kitten named Noah.

I’ve loved cats since I was a teenager in Miami — petting street cats around the neighborhood, later rescuing two and finding them homes. But Noah changed everything. My wife Carolina brought him home as a kitten in Puerto Rico, and he followed me everywhere. He looked at me like I was his whole world, and suddenly I understood: cats are loving, smart, funny, but wildly misunderstood.

Back in 2017, cat culture in America felt stuck. It was outdated, niche, mostly built around show breeds and a stereotype that cat people were antisocial or “weird.” Pet events were really about dogs. There was no space that felt fun, creative, social — no place that celebrated cats as they deserved. My sister Johana and I looked at each other and thought: someone needs to fix this.

So we built it. Johana and I grew up taking art classes, obsessed with creativity, and we wrapped everything we loved — art, design, music, community — around cats. POP Cats wasn’t the biggest cat event in America when we launched, but it was the start of something nobody had seen before: a cool, creative and vibrant cat culture movement. People brought their own cats. Artists brought cats to life in ways that felt new. Adoptions happened on the spot. It felt like magic.

Over twenty-five editions later, from Miami to Seattle, having worked with 50+ rescue organizations, cat culture has completely transformed. Cats are everywhere — in art, in fashion, in mainstream culture. We’re proud to have helped spark that shift.

But the journey didn’t stop at events. Touring the country for nearly a decade, we got to know our community in a way most brands never do — face to face, weekend after weekend, hearing what cat parents actually cared about. After the pandemic, like a lot of people, I started paying closer attention to what I was putting in my own body — reading labels, asking harder questions about ingredients. And then I looked at Noah and thought: why aren’t we asking the same questions for our cats?

So we went deeper. We dove into the clean-label world of cat supplies and started building the kind of products we wished already existed — simple ingredients, thoughtful formulas, treats and litter that are genuinely better for cats and the homes they share with us. No mystery fillers. No greenwashing. Just honest products made by people who actually know cats, made for people who love them.

That’s POP Cats. One kitten. A movement across the country. A better way to celebrate — and take care of — the cats we love.
